South Africa

To South Africa with love

My best South African Experiences

(Hot tip: Add some of these travel, adventure and safaris to your bucket list!)

Dearest South Africa

The time has come to say totsiens, hamba kahle, till we meet again, go well.

This is not goodbye. You and I will encounter each other again. So, it is ‘see you later’ most probably when we least expect it.

We’ve had some of the best times in our lives on your beautiful soil, South Africa. Seasoned with sprinkles as well as eruptions of laughter, fun and happiness. We have made memories over the decades that will last me forever (or at least for quite a while). Ones that I will never forget. How could I? I’ve felt you, through my blood, sweat and tears. Your good. Your bad. From within my deepest core to my every pore. I have felt the beat of your drum; I will always be part of your soul and presence.

You are the land where my roots dug in deep. From birth until long into adulthood. Your pulse is nestled inside me, your dust has gently brushed over my skin and sometimes even wrapped itself around me. I’ve sobbed with you and wept for you. Yet at times you have shown me your empathy.  I have been tickled with giggles of happiness or amusement within you. I have even roared with laughter with, because of or at you.

I will always wish the best for you no matter what happens inside your borders. Distance may divide us but you will stay deep within my heart, forever. Life is a journey and it must take me away from you on an adventure and a new life I willingly and gladly welcome with open arms.

Roaming Fox

Even so South Africa, let me reminisce with you and tell you of my memorable times. Let me remind you of your beauty and your assets. Some extraordinary moments in exceptional places only came my way once in my life. Let it not worry you, because others were repeated time and again.

Karoo National Park outside Beaufort-West

From Limpopo River in your north to Cape Agulhas in your south we travelled on your highways and byways. Roads of tar or dirt led the way. We tried our utmost to explore your length as well as your breadth.

Along adventurous routes, we went on scenic road trips and memorable voyages, not once, not twice, but numerous times. We searched for your best places from the east coast of KwaZulu-Natal to the west coast of the Northern Cape as well. Beautiful Mzansi.

Buffalo mom and calf

You presented us with unbelievable moments of precious close encounters right beside your wildlife while walking in the bushveld or resting on the northern shores of your river embankments.

Close encounters with elephants

Equally unforgettable were those moments on safari on our quest to visit each and every one of your diverse national parks. We did not succeed to see them all but we tried our darndest. From elephant encounters to posing predators, you showed us many creatures, great and small.

Fish eagle

Ground squirrels

Pygmae kingfisher

Burning skies in the evening on your coastal landscapes or mountain ranges were worth lingering at while your prominent landmarks whether recognized or hidden in a secret spot are hard to forget but oh, so easy to admire.

Drakensberg Mountains - Amphitheatre

Your embracing magnificent mountains offered scenic backdrops and countless adventures. They were also great escapes for family fun, as well as for special occasions. I’ll never forget those walks in nature or those splashes in your wild, icy pools.

Cango Caves

Ancient San rock paintings

You’re an enigma with many mysteries still untold but with absolute certainty I can say, the generosity of your people has fed my soul. Your food has warmed my belly and your drink has soothed my parched throat. You sweetened the deal with delicious delights.

My time in South Africa might have faded for a while but I trust it will never vanish completely. I will treasure these priceless memories forever until the day I can add a few more, even if briefly.

Until then, my gift to you is to get on my soapbox and broadcast to the world that South Africa should be on everyone’s bucket list, even with all its dramas.

Till we meet again.

With fondest love,

Alma

Sorrow is better than fear. Fear is a journey, a terrible journey. But sorrow is at least an arriving. For fear impoverishes always, while sorrow may enrich.
